[ daisy has been back in new amsterdam for less than 48 hours, and she's already sliding into powers training mode like she never left. only this time, there's a little more certainty to her step, a zen calm in her motions — if she survived the framework and space and being sold into inhuman slavery and being the destroyer of goddamn worlds, she can survive this. it's just another crisis.
she's good at those, now. she's good at this, too. teaching and guiding and helping people make the most of what gifts they've been given. there's a part of her that still aches for the earthquakes that used to rumble beneath her feet — a part that still hopes fervently that the deal she made with cassius before she disappeared will pan out the way she wants it to — but it's no longer a roar in the back of her head. she's lived without her powers now, even been happy to give them up; she can do it again.
there are things here she wants more, anyway.
for now, there are things to focus on. like training with catra, down in the abandoned buildings by the still-in-progress sports bar slash safehouse. daisy gets there a little early, half past seven. it gives her time to prepare: to tear down debris, to repurpose it into weapons and shields and whatever else she can manage.
while she works, the blue glow in her chest practically fills the space, barely hidden by the thin fabric of her tank top. ]
[ If there's anything Catra's good at, it's stealth. She approaches the building via rooftop, scampering from building to building with her catlike ease and grace, before climbing into the one Daisy nominated from a high window.
She doesn't like to be observed.
She just watches Daisy for a while from the rafters, taking mental notes. Finally, though, she speaks up. ]

[ Catra is lounging in the rafters above, lying on a beam sideways, tail hanging down lazily. She examines her nails. The picture of relaxation. ]
[ daisy's expecting company. granted, she's expecting company that comes through the front door, but a person is a person, so she doesn't startle. just swivels her head to get a better look at the source of the noise, brow raising for a moment in quiet amusement at catra's choice of perch, before offering an exaggerated shrug. ]
I've got a lot going on everywhere. Building helps me think.
[ plus, there's something viscerally satisfying about tearing something down by simply willing it to be done. ]
Tell me about your fight with Rey. Your chest glow while you were fighting?
Not the first time. It did the second time, but like I said-- nothing happened.

[ broken seems extreme. but then, daisy doesn't much believe that powers like these can break. they can be hard to control, or difficult to define, but they don't break. once they're understood, they work. consistently. ]

I don't know! [ It comes out a little more snappish than she means it to. ] The first time... well, we were fighting. [ But she already tried fighting again with Jyn and that didn't work. So it can't be just that. She pauses again, trying to rack her brain for what else was going on during that adrenaline high. ]
Just for once in my life I'd like for something to go right! Why are you still facing away-- the demo's over! I can't do it!
[ At that precise moment, the blue light comes back, and Daisy might just feel herself compelled to turn around and stare at Catra, unable to look away even if she tries, even as Catra's still ranting. ]

[ it isn't as strong as the compulsion drugs, nothing quite so obvious that she knows she can't, but a girl as strong-willed and stubborn as daisy johnson can recognize when the instincts in her head aren't her own.
