Oh, the new one? [ she takes a bite of her lettuce wrap in order to hide the laughter that threatens to spill out. ] Cassian really likes that one.

[ and jyn. he really likes jyn. he wants to put his mouth on jyn's mouth too. ]

You know what? [ she gestures between them with her fork. peter's spider-senses are blowing up. someone is gonna lose a hand! ]

You can both fuck off.

[ real intimidating, with the humor escaping the purse of her lips. ]

'Kay.

[ and then, smiling entirely too wide for someone who's truly intimidated, daisy reaches over to pull a grape tomato out of jyn's salad, popping it in her mouth with a satisfied hm. ]

How was work? Still trying to terraform gas?

Is that what you're doing?

[ was that even possible? ]

And here I am just carrying boxes around all day.

No! Because it is pointless to terraform a gas giant when you could build a city above it anchored to the gravitation at its core, and then mine gasses from the planet itself if you want to take advantage of natural resources.

[ jyn's voice pitches up a little but she complains about this in the lab itself so. everyone already knows how stupid she thinks the idea is. luckily, she thinks they are leaning more toward terraforming jupiter's many, many moons. ]

[ daisy's eyes glaze over because she has heard this so many times she can't even count it ]

Yeah, but you did get a bunch of trees planted, so. There's that.

I honestly have no idea what you just said.

[ he was a keep your feet on the ground type of guy. obviously, it was something jyn was very passionate about though. maybe he'd do some reading tonight so he could better understand what the hell she was talking about. ]

I fixed a broken piece of equipment today so obviously the big ideas are with you.

[ this is what happens when you put a girl born in space on a stupid dirt planet. ]

They're not really big ideas. [ they're sensible ideas.

her moment of fervor cools thinking about her trees. it's still baffling to her that jovavich followed through. she is used to politicians that talk about fighting for peace but clam up when it came time to actually stand up and do something about it.

politicians don't actually listen. cassian was right to frame it as a political move for leverage. ]

It was a good one, though.

[ and since daisy doesn't compliment people just to hear the sound of her own voice, it's something sincerely meant, even if it's flippant. ]

Did you get Marcos your old grunt job?

[ and he's thankful for that. ]

Saved me from being a vagrant and turning to busking for money.

[ not that he had any musical talent. or a musical instrument. or any desire to do that at all. ]

[ jyn would acknowledge daisy's compliment but she has the emotional maturity of an eggplant. as it is, she just shoves more salad in her face and lets marcos field the question about his own job.

They used to where I came from. You had to be somewhat good to make any real money.

[ but even the worst people would get pity money thrown at them. ]

I knew a couple kids who pretended to be buskers. [ a beat. ] They were mostly in it for the pickpocketing, though. That's where the real money was.

[ she was an orphan and a homeless kid! give her a break! ]

[realists]

[ jyn thinks about stabbing marcos with the fork but she doesn't want to, you know, further traumatize her friend. these two people are her first friends in this place. that's a funny thought that makes her stomach twist uncomfortably.

she pushes it away. ]

I used to cheat at Sabacc but no one could prove it.

[ she also used to just outright steal things. yolo: the jyn erso story ]

[ let him tell you about the cars he's hotwired over the past few weeks, jyn. too bad he hadn't kept those. ]

[ yes, daisy remembers new tokyo, alright. though she mostly remembers it because she'd gotten into a big fight and nearly died of hypothermia. different priorities. good thing jyn was on the rescue mission track. ]

I'd say you missed out, but honestly, you really didn't. [ she does not miss the gulag. ] I'd rather deal with a blizzard than fighting other people's nightmares any day.

[realists]

You were the only silver lining in New Tokyo, [ she tells marcos.

new tokyo was shitty. it snowed and she got hit with a chair trying to help someone and she and prompto crashed a bike and then she had to fortune told and learned she and everyone who died with her on the beaches of scarif were forgotten after the war so that a jedi who deserved nothing could receive sole credit for winning the war.

fuck that whole city. ]

I hate that place.

Wasn't really my favorite either. [ it was place where his life had changed and he hadn't been able to go back yet. and, if he does find a way, he's not sure what kind of person is gonna be sent back to the mutant underground. ]

But I'm glad I could at least give you one good memory. [ it's not much but it's something. ]

[ as things sometimes go with jyn, the conversation invites a lull, an opportunity to breathe in and be reminded of the traumas and suffering that links them. daisy might joke that jyn is her sister, but the sentiment is real — they may not be related by blood, but they are connected by things much, much more important.

but that doesn't mean she wants to sit here and think about them on her not-long-enough lunch break. ]

Enough about that disaster. What's Cassian making for dinner? Did we get another box?

[ sure, she just ate, but they can talk about food. they can always talk about food. and marcos? well, he's obviously invited now. ]

We did, he's making...

[ she zones out for a second, scrolling through their recent texts. force, they talk to much... where is the food? oh look a squirrel! ha. good squirrel. oh there it is! ]

Roasted butternut squash and portobello mushroom ravioli with sautéed spinach, brown butter, sage, hemp parmesan, parsley, and pecorino. What's pecorino? [ a beat. ] Oh it's cheese made from nutritional yeast. It looks nice.

[ she throws the photo of the dish at them both ]

Right, that looks nice?

That's a mouthful.

[ he doesn't know what half of those ingredients are but they probably go well together. ]

I'm gonna have pizza, I think.

[ easy and greasy. ]

[ daisy nods, briefly; the menu sounds great, but she would honestly eat anything cassian put in front of her because she's happy so long as she doesn't have to cook.

as for marcos, she just squints. ]
