[ so, there had been a slight incident after one of his matches that night. the match itself had been simple, quick, but the man had decided to run his mouth.

and run his mouth some more.

and he kept running it while illya had been changing in preparation for leaving for the night. it was then that he'd hit on a particularly sensitive subject and all that precise control that illya thought he had disintegrated in the blink of an eye.

his hand isn't broken but the man's nose might be. and now there were people involved, questions being asked, accusations being thrown, and it's all causing him to be delayed. ]

I am not sure if you're at my apartment but if you are, feel free to eat dinner. I will be there as soon as I can.

[ maybe he needed to work a little more on that control. hmmm. ]

[ she had been there. earlier in the evening, for his first few matches, daisy had come by to bet on a few rounds and make a little extra cash before the tournaments started up in earnest — but she'd ducked out early to run a few boring errands.

she's not entirely sure how "a few errands" got sidetracked into trying on clothes in a boutique a few blocks from the match, but here she is. ]

still out, actually.
everything okay?

[ deadeye stares into the mirror at this horrible dress she picked off the rack. this is why she doesn't shop alone. where is markus when she needs him!!! ]

Fine. Just delayed.

[ by idiots. one such idiot is yelling at him right now, demanding he be arrested or what passes for an arrest in this city. this is such a waste of time. ]

Just waiting to be finished.

[ with figuring out if he was going to be arrested or let off with a warning. he is not apologizing, though. ]

[ he's usually fairly efficient. delays are strange, but his message alone doesn't give her too much reason to be concerned. even still, she verifies. just to be on the safe side. ]

is there a line for the showers tonight?

[ why else would he be waiting?

there's a brief pause as her attentions shift to zipping up an alternative dress. this one, she sends a picture of. it's very much a myspace-era 'photo in a mirror', but it works. ]

do you hate this?

[kgbs]

That is not the reason for the delay. I've already showered.

[ can you hear the sigh in his voice? if not, just know it's there. this is getting to the point of ridiculousness. he gives his hand a shake and watches the owners of the fighting rings finally start to disperse everyone.

except him, of course. come on. ]

I don't hate that, no. I think it would look very flattering on you. It's a good color. You will look lovely.

what's going on?

[ maybe there's a fire. maybe he's arguing over betting percentages with the bookie. he doesn't usually squabble over that, but who knows. ]

i hate it.
honestly, i hate all of them.
i've been here an hour and i haven't found one thing i actually like enough to pay this much for.

Nothing important.

[ ...in his opinion, at least. it'll be over with soon. he'll answer a few questions and promise not to do it again and be on his way. ]

If you hate them, don't buy them. There is nothing wrong with the clothes you usually wear. I like those too.

if it's not important, why don't you leave?

[ he's the most stubborn person she knows (after herself). she can't imagine whatever's going on is so fascinating he can't just... walk out the door. ]

i've been here so long, i should be able to find something.
i don't understand how people justify spending this much on clothing they're only going to wear a couple of times.

Because I can't.

Because to some people, money is no object. If it's too difficult for you, don't buy anything. Don't over analyze this, Daisy. They're just clothes.

[ "don't over analyze this", he says. like she's doing it on purpose. she makes a face into the mirror, but doesn't say anything about it. ]

Why shouldn't you over analyze it?

[ that's what the question is for, isn't it? he's sure it is. ]

Because it is not worth it. They are just clothes and you are more than what you wear.

why can't you leave?

[ she hates this store. it's too pretentious. the prices are so high and she doesn't know what to pull off the rack for herself. ]

[ excellent phrasing. he's proud of that. good job, illya. he sounds like a real helper. ]

[ pause. ]

let me guess: the other guy looks worse?

I didn't exactly look at him. I was too busy.

[ turning his face into a lump of mush. ]

It's fine. I will be home shortly.

too busy punching him in the face?

[ yeah, she thought so. ]

how's that self-control working out for you without training?

He said the wrong thing.

[ unfortunately for him. ]

I can control myself just fine.

if that were true, you'd be in this dressing room with me right now.

[ because you wouldn't still be where you are now, probably getting yelled at for fighting outside of the ring. you know, if she had to guess. ]

It is one incident. It is over and done with. I can meet you there now if you would like.

[ brushes this whole thing under the rug, thank you. ]

i don't know if you could control yourself.

[ she's teasing. ]

you had a hard time keeping your hands to yourself the last time we tested your self-control.

[ there were two people involved in that whole thing if you remember correctly. ]

You were the one that chose the alleyway.

[ she's innocent. ]

you weren't offering any alternatives.

[ don't make him laugh. ]

I didn't see the need to. It worked out quite well in the end for the both of us.

[ and thus, this whole thing wasn't even a concern. ]
